We expect a lot from our feet.
They carry us from one task to the next, help us balance, bear the load of everything above, and keep us moving forward. Yet, most of us—myself included—barely think about them unless they hurt.
We invest in spine support, core strength, and even posture-perfecting pillows . . . but we rarely ask, “What do my feet need today?”
Here are some stats about your ground grabbers:
- Up to 87% of people wear shoes that are too small for their feet.
- Nearly 80% of people have foot pain, but only 30% seek help.
- Poor footwear is responsible for nearly 75% of foot-related issues.
- Toe strength is one of the strongest fall predictors in older adults.
After my recent chat with the brilliant Dr. Courtney Conley on the Positively Altered podcast, I’m convinced: We’ve got it backward. If we really want to move through life with less pain, more energy, and better alignment, we need to start from the ground up.
So, today, with Courtney’s help, I’m bringing you a Top 10 List of Sneaky Signs Your Shoes Are Sabotaging Your Health. But first, a confession.
I have a . . . boot problem.
No, not the sturdy hiking kind or the supportive wide-toe box ones that Dr. Conley would approve of. I’m talking about a closet full of silver, snakeskin, pointy-toed cowboy boots that—let’s face it—are more fashion than function.
They’re “fire,” as my daughter says. But they’re also compressing my toes, distorting my natural gait, and quite possibly throwing off my entire spinal chain.
Specifically? My SI joints—the sacroiliac joints that connect my spine to my pelvis—take a beating when my feet can’t do their job. These joints act like shock absorbers, transferring movement and weight between the upper body and legs.
When footwear messes with our stride, the SI joints often pick up the slack. The result? Hip pain, low-back strain, or that nagging feeling that our walk just isn’t right.
So, how do you know whether your shoes are ruining your posture, gait, or mood? Let’s count ‘em down.
- Your toes feel crowded, even when your shoes are off.
- You wear shoes that look better than they feel.
- Your favorite flip-flops have you curling your toes just to keep them on.
- You can’t remember the last time your toes spread.
- Your shoes have a heel-to-toe drop that changes your posture.
- You’ve got bunions, hammertoes, or foot pain you’ve normalized.
- You buy “wide” shoes, but the toe box still tapers.
- Your gait looks more like a shuffle than a stride.
- You’re stronger in your hands than your toes. (Spoiler: That’s not great.)
- You kick off your shoes immediately when you get home—and breathe a sigh of relief.
If you nodded at even a few of these, you’re not alone. The good news? With small changes and better awareness, you can walk your way into better health.
From toe yoga to shoe spectrums to ditch-the-socks debates, Dr. Conley and I dig into all of it in our lively podcast episode.

And for the record, I’m keeping the boots. But I’m also buying toe spacers. Balance, right?
